Teachers knew from
years of experience that kids learn at their own pace, but sometimes the
traditional classroom makes it difficult to do so. With the integration of
technology in education, children can slow down and go back over lessons and
concepts whenever required, and more advanced kids can go ahead with their
desired speed. It also frees up the teacher to help kids on a more one-on-one
level. As the pilot initiative they have introduced content creation, online
quizzes to the teachers with the support of the smart school program. Many
teachers were very positive on e-learning culture due to the improved
efficiency and the easiness that they experienced.
Certain period after
introducing the smart school program to the school, school management wanted to
further strengthen the public private partnership for the program to develop
their infrastructure and they found Old Girls’ Association of Visakha
Vidyalaya to support on introducing smart interactive
boards to few learning spaces. The school decided to phase out this
infrastructure development to sustain the impact. Therefore, A/L section was
selected for the first phase and trained teachers on content development and
using both their own and readymade e-learning contents with smart boards.
Before improving classrooms, first set of interactive boards were installed at
the A/L science laboratories and commerce/arts rooms replacing traditional
blackboards/whiteboards for quick adaption of the teachers for delivering
enhanced learning experience for students.
UNICEF and the Ministry of Digital
Infrastructure and Information Technology visited the school to see how the
teachers use the technology and teachers showcased their teaching techniques
and the mechanisms on how they use the technology to improve the efficiency of
teaching process. Everyone was highly impressed with the performance of the
teachers. Parallel to that, teachers were guided to regularly use ‘Headstart’
Learning Management System for content sharing and conducting online quizzes
for students. Also, lots of Advance Level Physics, Chemistry and Biology
practical videos were created and teachers use the videos to explain the theory
in detail and the students are empowered to be mastered with the necessary
knowledge on the subject matter through LMS. It immensely helped them to revise
the practical experiments they have done at school when preparing for
term-tests and public competitive examinations. As the first ambassador of Headstart’s Smart Schools Project, Ms. Anuradha Dissanayake is committed to revolutionizing the learning system and is the administrator of O365 and LMS. Ms. Dilangani Bulathge has been a tremendous help to her as an ambassador. Ms. Buddhinie Madawatte, Coordinator (Smart board) has also embraced the challenge of this transformation.
It’s observed that the
teaching-learning process through technology at Visakha Vidyalaya has immensely
become a joyful and a meaningful experience for both Students and Teachers.
Therefore, the efficiency and the quality of education disseminated at Visakha
Vidyalaya has proved to be productive according to the Sustainable Development Goals
in Sri Lankan Education system.
